Google Wave – Invites Are In   October 27th, 2009

As I hinted in a previous comment, I now have some Google Wave invites in my account.

Now as we all know they are pretty rare so I am not going to be just giving them away as I will be reserving them mainly for friends and colleagues so we can interact on Wave but, I had already decided that I would be putting one up for grabs here on my blog as a thank you for those who regularly read my ramblings.  Not sure exactly how I am going to do it, I thought perhaps I would just leave it open and maybe in a week or so, read down through the comments on the post and the best one wins!  Seems like the easiest solution…

So, leave a comment below, be as creative as you want (“hello I’d like an invite please” doesn’t really do it…), it doesn’t even have to be on topic, ‘freestyle’ is the key here!  Best comment wins.  Be sure to check back to see if anyone else leaves something more interesting so you can counter!

Enjoy!

Note:  I’m also an active Google Voice user so will soon have some invites for that too..!

Update 29/11/2009 – 10 more invites to give away!  As per my comment below, if anyone who has ALREADY commented below still needs an invite, leave another comment just to let me know and you get an invite!  Simple as that, first come first served for those that qualify over the next few days, but be quick…  Starting on 01/12/2009, the remaining invites will be given away at a rate of 2 a week until they are all gone.  I’ll use the same methods as above so if you have not commented on my blog before, please leave me an interesting comment below and you’ll be in with a chance.  It doesn’t have to be about anything in particular, it’s purely to add interest to the thread!  Enjoy…

Thanks Chris, although I am trying to work out if that’s a request for a wave invite or just a link to another collaboration tool! Worth remembering that Google Wave is also free and also hosted on-line so needs no installation either. OK so it’s still in preview phase but should hit market later this year..! I predict that when it does, it will probably upset a lot of other vendors who already have similar tools, such as the one you suggest. Thanks.

    Godwin Says:

Hey my name is Godwin and I’d like an invite to Google wave. Maybe you were just wondering what type of name is Godwin? and where did anyone come up with that name? well I’ll tell you LOL (shhhh its not even on my blog yet).

When I was born I had a problem, not the usual ones (I don’t know what usual ones are but mine wasn’t it). Well I don’t wanna keep you in suspense for too long….when i was born I couldn’t pee…i know it sounds funny now but at the time it wasn’t LOL. Something inside my body wasn’t connecting properly and so the doctors had to do a surgery on me. That being said the likely hood of my survival was very slim.

My mom was crying and my dad comes up to her and says, “don’t worry honey God won’t take away our baby this time” (my mom had a miscarriage before me). And right when my dad said that the surgery was over and the doctor came and told my parents that it was a success and I will live. My dad figured that it was no coincidence that the surgery stop right when he mentioned god. So he decided to name me Godwin because in this scenario God won.

LOL hope that was creative enough for ya…and hope to get an invite my email is Gwin390(at)gmail.com …and for the record I am happy my dad named me Godwin and not Godwon that would be awkward.

Well, I can not think of anything creative to say really. Hopefully you don’t think of me as a selfish person who wants Google Wave all for himself. You got a nice blog here, much better than the one i tried to start and ended up sadly ditching. I started a forum on Google Wave though.

I guess i will tell you a joke.

Why do ducks have webbed feet?
    To stamp out fires.
Why do elephants have flat feet?
    To stamp out burning ducks.

I actually thought that one was funny. Cheers, and have a good time waving!

One fine day in England, there lived a boy called Elliot. This boy, he was as curious as the most curious thing. He was so curious, he was itching to try out the new Google Wave, and craved an invite from somebody generous enough to send one out. In fact, he was curious enough to shout his email to the world, so that anybody who saw could invite him. His email was elliot.bateman@googlemail.com. He then waited patiently for that generous somebody to come along. The End.

as I wrote in my blog over and over, it’s a shitty thing what Google did, and you Mike is not any better! You aren’t any better than those dickheads selling invites at 10$ a pop instead you make people jump through hoops, I work for a multi-national billion dollar company and I signed up for an invite years ago! I should have gotten one, the waverse ain’t fair my friend..

anyway dude, I give up, I am gonna die old and lonely with no wave to comfort me so be it,

    cheers,

    Mike Says:

Zach, I’d like to be able to see your comments but notice that you choose not to add your blog URL.

So you’re not too keen on what Google are doing? well, I guess that’s your prerogative but it seems to me that actually you are very keen on using Google Wave, and your negative tone stems from the fact that you do not yet have an invite and feel bitter about it. If you’re so uninterested why are you browsing blogs that are offering invites? As for me not being any better than Google, I find that quite funny actually. I too waited a long time for invite; now I have one. I have given away the invites to my friends and colleagues so that I can use Wave as it was intended but, I do have a couple spare so thought I would offer one here on my personal blog. Notice the word personal, it’s my blog and I’ll choose what to do with it thanks. I’m certainly not asking people to jump through hoops; all I have asked is that people leave a comment, if they wish not to then I am by no means forcing them. You’ll also notice in my post that I said it was for my regular readers, I was purely hoping for a bit of interaction with some of them, I always think blogs should be more interactive.

I find it interesting that you feel you ‘should’ have an invite simply because you work for a multi-national billion dollar company – so what. Google is offering invites on an invitation basis for a reason. Firstly, they were given to those in the community who have contributed to making the development successful. Secondly, those initial developers have been given invites to give out to further the development and testing. If everyone were to be simply given access then the system would simply collapse, it’s still being tested and is not ready for sheer volume of users yet. Let’s remember that it isn’t even in beta yet. I agree with you in regard to people selling invites, that’s not really what it’s all about but again, what some people choose to do with them is their business and if you are so against it, just don’t buy one.

Let’s hope you get an invite soon before you ‘die old and lonely’, I’ve given my girlfriend the task of choosing who’ll get my invite so who knows, she might find your post riveting enough to get mine, although personally I feel being so negative is not the way to go; being that you work for such a large company, why not send an internal memo asking if anyone has a spare invite, statistically speaking I’m sure you’d find someone who’s willing.

    Thanks for your comment.

Zach, I understand your pain, but perhaps this is a small indication that the world is not quite so driven by money as it is communities and contribution now, that seems like a good thing :)

I wouldn’t have called posting a creative comment ‘hoop jumping’ it is more a fair exchange for ‘encouragement’ to get involved in Mike’s community. I wasn’t actually going to post for an invite originally but Mike’s considered reply to you compelled me to join in.

As much as I am sometimes skeptical of Google’s motives they certainly are doing some impressive things, in particular I watched some of their live conference last night, they were discussing how to leverage technology to create a new paradigm in education. Using a real time moderated question system was a very nice touch and added greatly to the sense of involvement and value of participation.

Nice job on your blog Mike :)

I’ll ask my better half to have a look in a weeks time, so the 5th of November and get an invite sent out to whoever she chooses. I’ve heard that a lot of users are now also getting some additional invites, 20 I believe, so if I do get any more I’ll ensure everyone else who has posted a comment gets one if they still need one; can’t say any fairer than that!

I’ll admit that I am merely a casual/occasional visitor to your site, but you’ve enticed me sufficiently to suck up for a Google Wave invite. Having read your previous posts I think you may enjoy this witty riddle:

I will share the answer with you during our first Wave conversation…

Thanks for the opportunity at scoring an invite!

That Google Wave invitation deserves to go to a good home. A home that will care for it, nurture it, and love it like its own. At my house we a lonely wedding invitation just waiting for a new friend to keep it company. I’m sure they’ll get along just swell. I promise I will feed it, and play with it, and get online with it everyday.

My wife’s birthday is February 14, so you can imagine the panic I feel every year as Valentine’s Day approaches. Do you find it difficult to surprise your wife or girlfriend with just the right anniversary gift? Well, that is nothing compared with having to select the ultimate combo gift — Valentine’s Day plus Birthday on the same day! And let me tell you, we are way past flowers and candy and jewelry — those are just the expected starter gifts. The real gift has to be something unique, something rare, something valuable. The real gift this year must be a Google Wave account. Please help me make my wife happy by granting us the Google Wave invite. I promise to keep it warm and safe with regular use until it is formally gifted to my wife on Valentine’s Day, er birthday.

    Mike Says:

OK, the boss has spoken. I asked Vicki to have a look through the comments and choose one – I honestly had no input on her decision. I asked her to choose based on a couple of factors; firstly I was hoping for a few creative comments, something different from the norm, I have seen so many sites now with comment fields full of ‘can you send me one’ lines which don’t really add much interaction to the site. Whilst I don’t expect everyone too, it’d be nice to think that some of you will come back and interact with my blog again; certainly I’ll be checking out your sites if you left a URL. Secondly, whilst I’m more than happy to give away the invite to a new reader, or just someone casually passing through if the comment was interesting enough, I always thought it would be good to give it to someone who is a regular reader or someone who has contributed something to my blog/post.

There were a couple of comments which she really liked, some made her smile and some were just weird but her final decision has been made.

So, Russell, the invite is going to you based on your contribution to the thread, leaving 4 comments and interacting with my blog as I had hoped. Also, I’ve been told to tell you that the decider was that she wants to know what he has in his eye!?

I’m now down to 3 invites from my initial batch, which I am holding on to for the next few days as I am waiting to hear back from a couple of colleagues who I think may well have already been invited, so, it’s quite probable that I will have at least another to give away in the next week or so.

It would seem that Google are also giving away extra invitations to some Wave users after they have used their initial allocations, the second time around they are giving 20 invites so I have been told (I have friends who have already had a second batch…) so, please do check back as if I get these, I’ll give 10 away on here straight off; I won’t start a new thread if this happens, I’ll just pick off names from this thread and contact you to see if you still need an invite. If so, they are yours.

So, please continue to leave your comments and details and I’ll hopefully distribute some more wave invites soon!

    Thanks all.
