Cyanogen v4.2.5 ROM… November 16th, 2009
Typical, the day after I flash my ROM to Cyanogen v4.2.4 a new ROM, v4.2.5 is released!
To upgrade to v4.2.5 you can follow the same instructions as per my previous post but substitute the file in step 2 for this one. If you already have v4.2.5 installed, you can also use CM Updater – available from Android Market – to automatically download and upgrade to the latest ROM. I have tried both methods this morning to see if one is better than the other and they both produce the same results.
The change log from v4.2.4 to v4.2.5 shows the following:
- Eclair/Blur animations
- Eclair Dalvik
- WiFi update from Eclair
- Kernel tweaks
- Tiny video player is back
- Update phone mod from Cytown
- Contact list photos patch from Geesun
- Browser settings fix
- USB tether works thru WiFi connection
- Apps that automatically change the wallpaper work once again
- Other bug fixes and tweaks
I have only been running the new ROM for a few hours now but first impressions are that it is much faster.
Kudos goes once again to Cyanogen.

One thing I’m not so happy with in this ROM is the inconsistency with icons. A few icons have been updated to the Eclair ones, but the rest remain Donut. Shame that, I like the clean look of the newer icons.
Enoch’s theme was also a favourite, but since the dev isn’t going to support Eclair themes, I’m on the lookout for a similar one. Do you have a particular theme you’re using at the moment that you’d recommend, or do you keep everything as clean as possible?

You know, that’s the only thing that bugs me too. I was using a Dwang [image] ROM last week which has all of the Eclair icons, much prefer the look of them especially the GMail one; much more modern. I can only assume Steve will add them to one of the next Cyanogen ROMs but as you say, a bit weird that some icons are updated and some are not.
I’m not a huge fan of themes, I always find that they slow things down a bit so usually keep things nice and clean, I don’t even do desktop wallpapers as a rule. I think a nice clean black background and the new Eclair icons look really smart – but then I am odd ;- )
Maybe when I get my Droid with the extra performance…

Ah, the Droid… how often have I sat and dribbled as I consider it’s wonderfully retro looks, physical keyboard [a must], and beautiful screen… But I’m a humble student! Never will I be able to afford one. I only have a G1 cos a mate didn’t like the battery life. £20! Bargain.
Back to ROMs… I saw the Dwang ROM, and it looks nice but it’s not bleeding edge like Cyan’s… dilemma, dilemma.
Mike Says:
Couldn’t agree more mate, the Droid is arguably THE phone for me right now, just a shame that there are no immediate plans to bring it to the UK market. That said, it is available SIM free but at £450, an extravagance. Guess I’ll be sticking to the G1 for now too, maybe changing for a Hero when I find one at the right price. The plastic may not be as shiny but they do the same job ;- )
The Dwang ROM worked well, but for me there is something about Cyanogens ROMs, they just seem to be everything that an original ROM should have been; stable, fast and bundled with the right apps.
If you do decide to go for a Dwang ROM, let me know how you get on!
