Ubuntu 9.10 Installing Microsoft Office 2010 Beta… December 18th, 2009
As promised, an update on where I am at with trying to get a working installation of Microsoft Office 2010 on Ubuntu.
After numerous hours spent trying various options and configurations of WINE I’m still unable to get it working. Sure, I can get it to install but it won’t run so I can’t really call it a success. I’ll have some time over the Christmas break so will keep trying and hopefully will have a stable solution soon; these things have a habit of ‘falling into place’ and the answer is usually staring me in the face!

My original post showing how to install Office 2007 can be found here – http://www.mikesouthby.co.uk/2009/11/ubuntu-9-10-installing-microsoft-office-2007

I do the same but with no success so far. The Microsoft people did a good job on that. I tried to make a backup from an installed Vbox installed MsOffice2010 to the virtual C: of Wine, but it’s not working. I think that the key is to upgrade from Office 2007 to Office 2010. The problem is that I cannot manage to pass the password approval step. The installation tries to use a microsoft application or runs a script and it stucks.

I’ve just come across your site regarding Microsoft Cloud Computing and Virtualization. There is some good information and we may be interested in including you in our blogroll. Please feel free to contact. Cheers

Did you just so happen to get Office 2010 via WINE figured out?

Sorry, not yet. I haven’t had much time to work with Ubuntu over the last couple of months as have had another project rolling but hope to have some news regarding this soon.

@ Stephen, thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. I’ll be honest, owing to other projects I had parked this for a while. I’ll put aside some time though to give it another go, I’d say I managed to get 95% there previously so sure a solution can be found! I generally use the LTS builds, although will run a 10.10 virtual machine and see if the new build helps at all.
