HTC Desire: How To Install Google Earth May 5th, 2010
Google Earth works great on the Desire, but owing to the problems with the Desire still not fully working with the Market, it’s not available to download as yet. This problem seemingly is owing to Google not yet updating their databases with the authentication fingerprint for the Desire; talk to HTC and they’ll direct you to Google, talk to Google and you guessed it, they’ll simply not respond. Not very helpful to be honest and very frustrating to say the least, you’d imagine between the two companies they’d be eager to ensure full functionability to showcase the full potential of what is essentially the flagship Android device here in the UK. I could understand Google’s slow progress (read: reluctance) if the Desire were directly competing with the Nexus One but of course it isn’t really, they are selling in different markets.
There is of course a way to overcome this, all you’ll need to do is manually install the .apk file onto your Desire, the easiest way to do this is to install it using the HTC Sync software.
The .apk file can be found here (if you are having difficulty I have also put the file into a .ZIP archive here).
Enjoy.

HI thank you very much was looking everywhere for google earth on HTC desire.
Do you know if there is a way to install skype on the HTC desire?
Many thanks in advance
Mike Says:
Hi Cuz, afraid not. As far as I know it’s not available unless you are on the 3 network, by all accounts you can now download Skype from Planet 3 for the Desire but that’ll only work for 3 customers and not other networks.

hello where do i find google earth when installed on desire?
Mike Says:
It should appear in the apps tray just like the other apps, you may need to restart.
wayne Says:
sorry to be a pain, but having prods to send to app staller, which parts do i need to add mate?
Mike Says:
Hi Wayne, sorry but I don’t follow.. Have you installed the .apk using HTC Sync?
James Says:
Hi guys,
For those of you interested in getting Skype to work on your Desire (if you don’t have a contract with Three that is)… you can try Fring – http://www.fring.com/android/
OK, it’s not skypes own interface, but it will allow you to run VOIP calls.
Hope that helps!
Cheers

Hi Mike, I download the Google earth file successfully on the Desire. But when I run the installer, it kept running for a long and and gave me a fail message. Any idea?
Joe Says:
thanks for apk file and instructions Mike, gEarth working like a treat on my Desire. Is this exactly the same install as for the Nexus?
Joe Says:
by the way, re: skype – I am on three and the link sent to me to download skype for the desire just gives a page not found error. 3 seem to have revamped their website recently so perhaps this is just a corner that hasn’t been tidied recently.
Andy Says:
Hi Mike, thanks for the info. I downloaded your link and extracted files but no .apk file ?? Can you help
Mike Says:
Hi Andy, I have just tested the download link and it appears to work fine. You do not need to extract anything though, the file itself is the .apk that you need…
Trevor Says:
Hi Mike. Great your a star.Ive been looking to download this for over a week now. Works just as you say through the HTC sync.
I just renamed the zip file to apk and then let the application loader do the rest. I did need to restart the phone . Many thanks.

Thank you dude!!

Hi there Mike. I’ve tried to use HTC sync to install Google Earth onto my Desire but I keep getting the same message…’Installation not successful. Please ensure the app is compatible with your phone’…etc. I’ve been to the settings page on my phone and checked the ‘Unknown Sources’ field in the Applications setting but still no joy. Any advice, mate? I really would like to have GE on my phone!
Thanks in advance
Michael
Mike Says:
Hi Michael, not really, assuming you have a vanilla 2.1 installed it should work as described; it’s definately compatible with the Desire. Have you done anything to your phone i.e. rooted or flashed another ROM? That ‘could’ cause the phone to identify itself as a different device… if not, my next suggestion would be to back up data and do a fresh setup as this can often cure any little gremlins which creep in over time and often sorts little niggles like this out.
Michael Says:
Thanks for the reply, Mike. I must be missing something here because I wasn’t aware that I should install vanilla 2.1 onto my Desire. Can this be done without rooting etc? I’m sorry if that sounds like a stupid question to you but I’m really a novice with HTC and the whole android thing. I certainly haven’t rooted my phone or flashed another ROM.
Cheers
M
Mike Says:
Sorry Michael, perhaps the wrong use of the term vanilla! I didn’t mean it as it sounds actually, all I meant was a fresh or clean build, just as it came out of the box (Sense and all ;p). I’ve known instances in the past where certain apps which have been installed from the Market have strange effects on subsequent apps being installed. So, when a problem like this occurs I usually try reintalling the app that is giving you trouble but with a clean ‘base’ to rule out any conflicts. Does that make sense?
Perhaps virgin 2.1 instead of vanila 2.1 would have made more sense :)
Michael Says:
Ahhh, got you now! Cheers for that. I’ll give it a go and let you know what happens. Thank you for taking the time to reply to my messages. It’s most appreciated.

Dan Says:
Ziad, I had the same problem when I tried downloading and installing the apk file directly from my phone. I uninstalled the app and then installed HTC Sync on my computer; I downloaded the apk file to my computer, and then selected Application Installer and installed it that way. It worked like a charm.
Vitto Says:
Hi Mike,
First of all an explanation to everybody: .apk or .zip is the same… you can change file extensions, but the two are essentially the same…
As per installation of your google_earth.apk file on my htc Desire via HTC Sync, I get the icon on the phone, but when I click on install I get the progress bar saying “Installing…”, but then the message “Application not installed” appears.
Any suggestions?
I tried re-booting the device and tried the installation after a fresh boot, but it didn’t change anything.
Cheers, Vitto
Vitto Says:
Hi again,
Found the problem myself: I had not enough space on my phone memory! The error message was not clear at all tough.
I deleted some crap that I had downloaded over the past weeks and the app installed perfectly.
Beware that it needs 20+ Mb !!!
Thanks a lot !
Mike Says:
Glad you got it sorted Vitto, I agree though, there are a lot of error messages generally which are not clear enough throughout Android, one of the few annoyances.
