How To Sync iTunes With HTC Desire Via HTC Sync August 1st, 2010
With the release of FroYo on the HTC Desire, HTC also bring us the ability to sync directly with iTunes via HTC Sync. In order to use this new feature, you will need to download and install both the latest version of iTunes (v9 or greater) and HTC Sync [Mirror] (v3.0.5387).

The new version of HTC Sync not only gives the ability to sync with iTunes, but also allows far greater control over which items to sync with your PC and also, which items to backup from your phone; you can now control separately music, photos, calendar, contacts, bookmarks and documents.
Note: You need to uninstall the old version of HTC Sync before installing the new version and, although not prompted to do so, sync doesn’t seem to work until you have restarted your phone and PC after the install.
All in all, a very welcomed update.

Does not work for HTC Desire.
Mike Says:
Baz, it works fine with the Desire. Both me and the other half are using it with Desires. The screen shot above was whilst connected!
Craig Taylor Says:
It’s a pity that you don’t have the option to sync ‘all’ past appointments in the calendar, like the previous version…. maybe the official release will include this option??
SHAH Says:
how to sync all the songs from itunes to desire? its only synchronizing the playlists? i want all from my itune library?
Baz Says:
Hi, well mine just sits and says Initializing (just like the screen shot) but nothing actually happens. Shame there is no way to define the folder to sync to.
Mike Says:
@ Baz,
I had the same issue until I restarted both my PC and the Desire, then it just started working. Would instigate a sync automatically upon connection and I could also hit the sync option on either PC or Desire and again, it would work. I agree with you on defining a folder, that would be a great feature.
Mike Says:
@ Shah,
From what I can see you only get the option to sync playlists, probably as a lot of folk have vast libraries that’d fill up the microSD card?? To overcome this, I just created a new playlist called ‘Desire’ and put the music I wanted to copy across in there. It worked for me; guess if you wanted everything you could select all (Ctrl+A) and send to the newly created playlist.
Perhaps they will enable the option to copy the entire library in a subsequent release (if Apple haven’t shut down the feature by then!).
Mike Says:
@ Craig,
Essentially this is the official version, it’s just not been officially released yet for the Desire ;)
Whilst useful for some, I’m guessing that they just decided it was a feature that most people didn’t require and focused on future events. Still, would be nice to have the option as you say.
Harold Says:
Anyone try it with the Incredible yet? After all aren’t the incredible and the Desire very similar hardware?
James Says:
I can get it to sync and it puts all my mp3s on the Desire from an iTunes playlist, but buried deep down so I can’t access them from the music player. The only way I can play them is using Astro and navigating to and playing each file individually.

Hi Mike,
Does this version work with Android 2.1? Or just 2.2?
Thanks,
Shep
Steve Says:
This would be perfect for me IF I could get htc sync to read my playlists from my itunes library which is stored on the network (WD NAS drive)… any thoughts anyone as it only reads the empty local playlists?
p.s. works with desire 2.1
Pete Murray Says:
Syncing only itunes playlists seems a little pointless to me, especially when there are really good 3rd party softwares like doubleTwist that let you sync playlists and your library with ease!
Bob Koger Says:
Hi Mike,
I tried the updated HTC sync with my Desire but get a ‘Device does not have enough free memory’ when attempting to sync. My device has 10.6GB free on the SD card and internal mem shows at least 102MB free, I have Froyo installed. so is this a bug?.
I emailed HTC support and received the following message today:
‘HTC Sync version 3.0.3587 isn’t designed for the HTC desire at the moment please try version 2.0.33 available from our website’.
Has anyone else experienced this error?
tom Says:
Hey Bob,
Yeah I got the exact same problem on my Froyo-enabled Desire.
It’s a pain in the a** because I’ve had no end of trouble using the previous versions of Sync also. All I want to do is sync up my contacts and calendar and so far it’s been a frustrating ordeal. For some weird reason, every previous version of sync that I’ve tried has worked fine the first time and then refused to work subsequently. I’ve had to uninstall/reinstall every time I want to sync up! I’ve just got a brand new laptop and thought trying out the latest version (3.0) would fix my problems, but no, it gave me the ‘not enough free memory’ error…
Ian P Says:
Hi Mike, I have tried downloading HTC Sync 3. The HTC system asks for the Desire’s serial number. When I out it in the system tells me HTC Sync 3 isn’t available for the Desire. Is there a work around for this? Thanks
Jack Says:
Ian P – I had the same issue – I contacted HTC and they gave me a different S/N to enter… now I have the download.
HOWEVER, I don’t see any playlists apart from the “standard” iTunes ones – nothing I create (smart or “simple” playlists) appear in the list to be synced…. I’ve opened another case with HTC to see if they can offer any suggestions… I’ll post back if I get a solution.

GREAT butIm old so, how do I uninstall the DESIRE SYNC software please?

Hi All, my HTC Sync is working properly however everytime I check Astro my synced mp3s and images are burried deep within folders. also it always has a folder named D. Is there anyway that I could change the directory when I sync?
Glenn Says:
I installed the new version of HTC Sync and it syncs my calendars, photos etc perfectly to my Desire. When I try to Sync my itunes playlists I have a problem. I select Sync from itunes, but none of my playlists appear in the list. Could it be that it can’t find the itunes library? Though there is no setting I can find to point to it.
Any ideas? Thanks
Jon Says:
Hi,
Just a quick follow up comment, is there a straightforward solution for people using a Mac? You know, that computer from the people would brought you iTunes ;-)
Best,
Jon
Pete Says:
I have the same issue as a few others here: HTC Sync isn’t finding my iTunes library/playlist – presumably because they’re stored on an external USB drive rather than C:
Asides from moving my 120GB library to a drive that doesn’t have the room, does anyone know how to get HTC Sync to see my playlists?
Dave Says:
I’ve had my Desire HD for 2 weeks now and am totally peeved with HTC Sync – it is slow (updates libraries forever), intermittent and flaky (crashing out), claims its not connected when it is (the phone states it is).
I have been unable to get it to see my iTunes playlists and after talking to HTC realised I was wasting my time and money on the call (0845)
I am now using Double Twist as identified by Pete Murray (thanks Pete)
I have yet to sync my contacts / todos etc.
Look at Nokia – simples!

I have the same issue I am able to sunc my Contracts and calendars with pictures with no problem.
I can see my Itunes playlist but then I choose one, “7mb” it hangs at around the 50% mark and says there. and the only way out is to unstall the software and reinstall “pain in the a**”.
I hope HTC resolve this issue, as apart from this issue it is a good little app.

I use VCOrganizer for Calendar, Tasks, Notes, and Contacts; works flawlessly. I use MyPhoneExplorer for photos and documents because it can specifically designate where you want the files to go…it also backs-up all SMS messages…no buried-deep folders leading to all the subfolders and cr@p. I have a WD 2TB USB drive connected to my ASUS RT-N16 router that houses all photos, docs, and music; HTC Sync 3.0.555.1 (for purposes of HTC hardware drivers ONLY); Win7-32bitPRo; iTunes 10.4.1.10.
HTC Sync sees all of my playlists…lets me select which ones to sync. Although all music came through beautifully, it was painfully slow. Both the phone and PC’s notification icon show the device is connected and will actually start a sync fairly quickly, but the HTC Sync settings application takes forever to recognize a connection. You can go take a sh!t and do some laundry…then MAYBE the software will allow you to make changes to your sync preferences.
Since there is no application for Android that will play protected files imported from iTunes (Apple has to make their $ *somehow*…at least from those who don’t know any better…mwaaahahahaha!),there’s a way around it – burn them to CD, import them back into iTunes *from the cd*, verify they can play…then delete the protected files from your library (to avoid duplicates – you’ll still be able to re-download them for free from the store if you want to).
HTC Sync is useless – it takes WAY too much time to synchronize music. DoubleTwist is MUCH faster, easier…and no hassle syncing music. VCOrganizer & MyPhoneExplorer are MUCH better and way more user-friendly utilities for Outlook sync w/ Calendar, Contacts, Notes, Tasks, Documents, Photos, Videos, Application Backups, SMS backups, Phone logs, File manager, Call-management thru PC (for you dock-junkies like me)…all over wifi, even!!!
Long story short — don’t waste your time with HTC Sync except for driver installation.
Peace–and chicken grease!
~J
There is absolutely NO REASON to stay with HTC Sync unless they combine ALL of the features that VCOrganizer, MyPhoneExplorer, and DoubleTwist have.
